This unspoilt area of the Eastern Algarve is dominated by conservation areas and is an ideal location to enjoy the pleasures of walking in the countryside, there are many peaceful walks right on our doorstep. The beautiful Nature Reserve of Ria Formosa is only 10 mins drive away. Ideal for walkers and Bird watchers alike.
The park is an important refuge for endangered breeding Kentish Plover and Little Terns. Mainly between September and April there are often as many as a thousand Greater Flamingos in the park. The rare Purple Gallinule, a giant blue purple chicken equipped with long pink legs and a large red bill, never fails to facinate all who see it. All in all over 200 bird species regularly use the Ria Formosa throughout the year, many of which can also be seen at Casa Rosa in our large garden. Hoopoes nest on one of our terraces and Azure-winged Magpies abound.
Our area is mostly untouched by tourism yet it's close enough to get to any of the main resorts should you wish.
There are a number of excellent markets close to Casa Rosa:-
Every Sunday there is a Very large open street market locally and the first Sunday of the month it is in our local village just a short walk away.
Every first Sunday of the month there is a not to be missed big car-boot sale in Fuzeta. The same the first and third Sunday in Loule. And a smaller one in Quelfes (just down the road) every fourth and fifth Sunday of the month.
Well be happy to advice where and when the markets are taking place.
Our local beach is Fuzeta. Here you can choose between the city beach or take a little ferry boat for 5 minutes out to the outside of the Ria Formosa. Here you will find long sandy beach with restaurant and bars and it is possible to rent sun beds and umbrellas. Would you like to be on your own this is not difficult. 10 minutes walk and you'll find your own quiet spot where you can enjoy the sun.
From Olhao there is a ferry boat to Culatra and Farrol. Culatra is one of our favorites. here is a separate little community with church, school, grocery store and several restaurants and bars. A short walk from the ferry, the "center" and you're out on a beautiful long sandy beach. Well worth a visit.
Barrill is probably the beach with the best facilities. Several bars and restaurants, good sanitary facilities with showers and toilets. This was formerly the home for fishermen during the tuna season and the buildings are taken care of and now serves tourists. From the parking there is a small train taking you to the beach if you do not want to walk the ten minutes..
